BCP Storage

The Data Storage Service

ZIB (Zuse Institute Berlin) provides a centralised storage service for measurement data acquired at BioSupraMol. All measurement data from multi user devices are thus stored on a special shared file system drive, the BCP storage (BCPFS). Consequently, if using respective devices you need access to the BCPFS to reach your data.
Following, enrollment and usage of the service as user or admin are explained, and advantages and costs will be clarified.

BSM usage regulations have to be considered, as well.

For Users

To get access to the BCP storage the user has to sign in at the "MI-Portal" (https://portal.mi.fu-berlin.de/) using the ZEDAT account, followed by the registration as a workgroup member and as member of the respective device group(s). The workgroup manager of your group is doing this work group registration by adding your zedat account name. After this, you can apply for access to the devices directories at the respective device manager(s).

Attention: Registration in OpenIRIS does not substitute the registration at the MI portal. Both registration have to be done seperately.

For Administrators

User of the BCP data storage service are devided into three groups, i.e. user, workgroup owners, and workgroup managers. Users want to access the file system to use it for their daily work. Workgroup owners are responsible for the resources that are used at their laboratories. Generally, the workgroup owners delegate the everyday account management to the workgroup manager(s), which add ZEDAT accounts and thus provide access to the file system.

Advantages and costs

Advantages of the BCP storage system are backup and data provision for at least ten years, according to the good scientific practice rules. Therefore, creation of a particular directory for each measurement or measurement series inside the device directory is mandatory, and original data must not be changed or altered. Secondary data, which have been generated from the original data have to be stored in respective subdirectories. By using the BCP storage system, the resource providers omit the data transfer to mobile storage devices, e.g. USB sticks, which protects the device control computers.

At the moment the BCP data storage system is free of charge but may be liable to pay costs in future times.
